Every campus and township plan has fire lanes: a strip around the buildings that a fire tender must be able to reach. Most are paved in concrete or blocks. They are driven on in a drill or an emergency, and the rest of the year they add to the heat, the runoff and the hard-surface area on the site plan.
GridMats S3 keeps that strip green.
How it is built
- The base. An open-graded base over a non-woven geotextile separation layer on the compacted ground, designed by our engineers for the fire-lane access, so the rain soaks in.
- Sand bedding and the grass paver. The 30 mm grass paver (GP-30), 250 × 250 mm, in 100% recycled polypropylene. The 20 mm paver is for walkways.
- Root zone and grass. The cells are filled with a sandy root-zone mix, then seeded or turfed.
- Edges. Edge restraint all round, with U-nails on slopes and at the edges.
The paver holds the root zone and the base takes the load, so the roots stay uncrushed. The lane stays green where an ordinary lawn would rut.
When it opens
Foot traffic at once. Vehicles once the grass is 60 mm tall and rooted, in 4–6 weeks, so plan the planting for the grass to root before the lane is needed.
What it does for the site
- Supports green-cover rules and permeable-area requirements, subject to local approvals.
- Rain soaks in like a lawn: about 870 m³ a year infiltrated for every 1,000 m², with edge and outfall drains only where the levels need them.
- About 3 t of plastic waste reused for every 1,000 m².
- Low upkeep: mow and water. No resurfacing, no repainting.
Where it fits, and where it doesn't
S3 suits fire lanes on a base we design, overflow and visitor parking, amphitheatres and event lawns, walkways, drain margins and resort drives.
Choose something else when trucks use the lane every day (S1 or S2 take daily traffic), when vehicles need it before the grass has rooted, or when there is no water for the grass in its first season.
In service
- Svamitva Floresta, Bengaluru: grass-top roads and paths through a landscaped plot, in service since 2021.
- Waters India, Bengaluru: grass pavers for the amphitheatre and event lawn, 2022.
What it costs
Installed, ₹125–167 per sq ft (₹1,350–1,800 per m²), indicative. The 30 mm grass paver alone is ₹40–46 per sq ft (₹430–495 per m²) by order size, ex-works, ex-GST and ex-freight. The geotextile separation layer under the base is a separate BoQ item. Every site is priced from its own design.
For your estimate, send us the area, the location, the heaviest vehicle the lane must take, the soil CBR or soil type, and a site photo or layout drawing. Our engineers follow with the design, the bill of quantities and the cost comparison against your conventional section.
