The Cool Green Wall on the auditorium walls at Conscious Collective 2025, Vikhroli, Mumbai, 13 December 2025

Recorded at Conscious Collective 2025

What the wall did

7–8 °Ccooler air at the wall
15–20%better air quality
~40–50%less noise between the auditorium and outside
200 litresof water over 2 days for 500 plants

Air temperature at the wall. Recorded by the wall’s own sensors during the event, 11–14 December 2025, and shown live on screen beside the wall. A different wall, climate or space gives different figures, so we size each wall and agree with you what to measure.

The story

Reclaiming cool at Conscious Collective 2025

Conscious Collective 2025, a Godrej Design Lab initiative, took “Reclaiming Cool: Beating the Heat Together” as its theme. It ran on 11–14 December 2025 in the former Interio factory on the Godrej campus at Vikhroli, Mumbai, and drew more than 18,000 registered guests.

The 32 ft auditorium walls would normally be lined with plywood or gypsum board, used once and thrown away. Instead, GridMats and the Godrej teams built 2,048 sq ft (190 m²) of living wall: 16 panels, each 4 ft wide and 32 ft high, planted with 500 plants by the Godrej Horticulture team. Every panel and board in it is recycled plastic: polypropylene in the GridMats panels, multi-layered plastic waste in the boards behind them.

Sensors set in the GridMats cells read the wall continuously, the misting built into the panels ran itself from those readings, and a live digital twin beside the wall showed visitors what it was doing. It became one of the most photographed spots at the event. Godrej featured it on the Conscious Collective site as “Cool Green Wall – By GridMats”, calling it

“a scalable model for climate-positive urban design”.

After the event the wall was taken down and its materials went to Godrej Horticulture for reuse. The design is now a modular, monitored product, and GridMats filed a patent application in 2026 for a green-wall cooling module with sensors.

How it works

Recycled plastic, plants, water and data in one wall

How the Cool Green Wall is builtSide section: the wall, an MLP board, a GridMats panel with cocopeat in its cells, plants, misting outlets and sensors built into the GridMats panel; a pump lifts the water to the top of the wall and it flows down through the panel by gravity to the outlets; a controller switches the pump; a screen shows the live readings.water inpumppumped to the top, then down through the panel by gravityswitches the pumpControllerLive digital twin12345678

Side section, not to scale. The sensing and the dashboard are GridMats IoT; the boards are MLP boards.

  1. Wall, partition or frame. The system fixes to an existing wall or a light frame. At Conscious Collective it lined the 32 ft auditorium walls.
  2. MLP board. A rigid backing board pressed from multi-layered plastic waste such as chip packets and tetra packs. It takes water without rotting or swelling.
  3. GridMats panel. Open-cell panels in recycled polypropylene, fixed on the boards. The cells hold the growing medium in place on a vertical face.
  4. Cocopeat and plants. Light cocopeat fills the cells. The plants are chosen with the horticulture team for the light, shade and climate of the site.
  5. Misting and irrigation. A pump lifts the water to the top of the wall, and it flows down by gravity through a line built into the GridMats panels to the misting outlets (blue in the drawing). They cool the air in front of the wall, and the same line waters the plants: 48 points at the event.
  6. Sensors. Set in the GridMats cells (yellow in the drawing): temperature, humidity, soil moisture and air quality, read continuously. 30 sensors at the event.
  7. Controller. Runs the misting automatically from the sensor readings by switching the pump.
  8. Live digital twin. A dashboard shows every reading, panel by panel, on a screen beside the wall, for visitors and for the team that looks after it.

Live digital twin

The wall shows its own data

Every panel reported its temperature, humidity and soil moisture, and the air-quality readings joined them on one dashboard. The screen beside the wall showed the readings as they happened, and our team watched the same dashboard to keep 500 plants healthy on 200 litres of water over two days.

On a permanent wall the readings are logged, so the effect can be measured through the seasons and the watering planned from data.

About GridMats IoT

Where it fits

Walls that work hard in the heat

Event and auditorium walls

A living backdrop in place of single-use plywood or gypsum, taken down after the event and reused.

Offices and lobbies

A green, cooler wall where people work and wait, with the readings on a screen.

Factories and warehouses

Planted, misted walls by hot work areas, loading bays and rest areas, with sensors to show the effect.

Facades and boundary walls

Greener, cooler frontages for offices, factories and campuses.

Campuses, malls and public spaces

Green, cooler air and a visible climate story where people gather.

How a project runs

  1. Tell us about the wall: where it is, its size, the sun and shade, and the water and power points nearby. Photos help.
  2. We design the panels, planting, misting, sensors and dashboard with you and your landscape team, and price the wall.
  3. We install with your landscape team and the local workforce: boards and panels fixed, filled and planted, misting and sensors commissioned, the dashboard live.
  4. The misting runs automatically from the readings; your team sees every reading on the dashboard and looks after the plants. For an event, the wall comes down afterwards and the materials go for reuse.
