S5 · Grid at the GSB/WMM interface, asphalt on top · Keep your asphalt
Keep your asphalt. Put the grid in the base and build thinner.
OC-LW 40 (OC-HD 40 for the heaviest traffic) laid at the GSB/WMM interface, aggregate-filled, with at least 100 mm of compacted WMM above it. The bituminous layers follow MoRTH and the client's specification: bituminous concrete, SMA, mastic asphalt, cold mix or a RAP mix. Nothing changes above the grid.

OC-LW 40 laid at the GSB/WMM interface and filled with the same aggregate; WMM, DBM and BC above it exactly as MoRTH specifies
Why it wins
- The base gets twice as stiff. Modulus improvement factor 2.00 on a CBR 5% subgrade, 1.63 on CBR 10%, from large-scale tests at IIT Hyderabad.
- So the layers get thinner. In the IIT Hyderabad design examples, checked in IITPAVE to IRC:37: 14% thinner overall at 3.5 MSA, with 22–24% less bituminous and 11% less granular; 80 mm thinner at 50 MSA on CBR 5%.
- Nothing changes above the grid. Your contractor's asphalt scope, plant and crew stay the same; the grid adds one shift per 1,000 m².
- Weak subgrades. Where the granular base would otherwise be thick, the grid does the work of the extra aggregate.
Where it fits
Campus, township and approach roads · parking · plant peripheral roads · weak subgrades where the base would otherwise be thick.
Build-up

Choose S5 when
- The client or consultant keeps asphalt
- A thinner base, or a weak subgrade (tested at subgrade CBR 5–10%)
- The same asphalt contractor builds it
Not ideal when
- Asphalt is not required: S1 or S2 usually costs less
- Subgrade CBR outside 5–10% without engineering verification
What we need from you
- Area: length × width, or m²
- Location: city or a map pin
- Heaviest vehicle and vehicles a day
- Soil CBR if you have it, or the soil type
- The finish you want
- A site photo or layout drawing

On site

Installation at a glance
The six steps, what you need and when it opens, on one page. The installation guide comes by email on request; the SOP, the hold-point checklists and the method statement for your site come with your order. We train your contractor’s team: on site for up to 3 days for orders of 2,000 m² or more once the site is confirmed ready, online at no extra cost below that; on-site training is built into the product rate (one PO).

Drainage and terrain
Designs are customised to geography, rainfall intensity and topography: sub-surface drains sized to the rainfall class, cross-sections for plain and steep terrain.
